Finland to buy modern AMRAAM missiles for F-35 fighters from the USA
Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkinen has authorised the country's Armed Forces to purchase AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM medium-range air-to-air missiles from the United States. This is the latest and most technologically advanced modification of this missile, which will be compatible exclusively with F-35A multi-role fighters. This was reported by The Public.
The decision comes after the US Congress approved the sale of Raytheon missiles to Finland in September 2025 as part of the Foreign Military Sales programme. The first deliveries are to support the deployment of the Finnish F-35 fleet, which will gradually replace the F A 18 Hornet fighter jets.
According to Häkkänen, the new missiles will significantly increase Finland's ability to respond to threats and strengthen interoperability with the armies of the United States and allied countries. The procurement includes not only ammunition but also technical documentation, spare parts, logistics, personnel training, as well as repair and support services.
At present, AMRAAM missiles remain a key element of the Finnish Air Force's medium-range capability and are also used in NASAMS anti-aircraft systems. At the same time, the D-3 version is designed exclusively for the fifth-generation F-35 aircraft and will not be used on other platforms.
