Von der Leyen calls Ukraine's accession to the EU a key security guarantee
After the teleconference of European leaders on support for Ukraine, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen emphasised that Ukraine's accession to the European Union is one of the main guarantees of its long-term security
In a post on social media platform X, she noted that the discussion focused on further assistance to Ukraine, security issues and the reconstruction of war-torn infrastructure. According to von der Leyen, the EU's strategic goal is to create the conditions for a free and stable Ukraine to prosper
The European Commissioner stressed that EU membership is not only an economic choice, but also a political instrument of protection. According to her, Ukraine's integration into the European space provides sustainable guarantees of peace and deterrence of further aggression
She also noted that previous waves of enlargement have proven the benefits of membership for both the candidate countries and the EU itself. Enlargement has strengthened the security, stability and economic growth of the entire continent, and the Ukrainian case is no exception
