France calls for urgent UN Security Council meeting over escalation in the Middle East — Macron
France is initiating an urgent meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council in connection with the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. This was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron on social media.
According to him, Paris is in constant contact with European partners and Middle Eastern countries. Macron stressed that the confrontation between the United States, Israel and Iran has serious consequences for international peace and security.
The French president noted that the French authorities are taking measures to protect the national territory, citizens and interests of the country in the region. He also stated France's readiness to provide support to its closest partners if requested.
Macron described the current escalation as dangerous for all parties and stressed the need to stop it. According to him, the Iranian authorities must participate in negotiations to halt the development of nuclear and ballistic programmes, as well as activities that destabilise the region.
Separately, the French president said that the citizens of Iran should be able to determine their own future.
