Healthcare Workers’ Day 2026 in Ukraine: when is it celebrated and why was the date changed?
Healthcare Professionals’ Day 2026 in Ukraine
In 2026, Healthcare Workers’ Day in Ukraine falls on Monday, 27 July. It is on this day that the professional holiday for healthcare workers is celebrated, in accordance with a presidential decree that came into force in 2023

This is reported by UNIAN.

Why is Medical Professionals’ Day celebrated on 27 July?

For over a quarter of a century, the professional holiday for medical workers in Ukraine was observed on the third Sunday in June. This date was established back in 1994.

In 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 327/2023, which moved the celebration to 27 July. At the same time, the previous document setting the June date was repealed.

The Ministry of Health explained that the change of date was intended to separate the Ukrainian calendar of professional holidays from the Russian one and to establish a distinct tradition of honouring medical workers.

The new date was not chosen at random. 27 July is the day on which the Church calendar honours Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr, whom Christians regard as the patron saint of doctors and healers. According to legend, he devoted his life to helping the sick, which is why his name has been associated with medicine for many centuries.

The significance of the holiday during wartime

During a full-scale war, the medical profession has taken on even greater significance. Ukrainian healthcare workers are saving wounded soldiers and civilians, working in frontline areas, hospitals and triage centres, often under fire.

To mark Healthcare Workers’ Day, hospitals and other healthcare facilities traditionally honour their best staff with certificates, letters of thanks and awards.

If you wish to congratulate a healthcare worker in person, flowers, a card or a small symbolic gift would be appropriate. At the same time, for many in the sector, words of gratitude and respect for their daily work remain the most important thing.
