Iran has accused Ukraine of attacking a vessel in the Caspian Sea
This is according to Reuters.
Iran’s statement
Tehran has described the incident as an act of aggression and stated its intention to defend its national interests and security. The Iranian side has also accused Ukraine of allegedly attempting to extend the war beyond its own territory.
According to the state news agency IRNA, the chargé d’affaires for Ukraine was summoned to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An official protest was lodged with him over what Tehran described as a “hostile and criminal attack”. Ukraine has not yet officially commented on these allegations.
Zelenskyy’s reaction
Iran’s statement came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian military had struck a Russian warship and vessels which, he claimed, were being used to transport military cargo linked to Iran in the Caspian Sea.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy stated that since early July, Russia has been actively conducting satellite surveillance of the Persian Gulf states and US military facilities in the region, and, according to him, is passing the images obtained to Iran.
The President also claims that the Ukrainian side has established a link between Russian satellite reconnaissance and subsequent Iranian strikes. According to him, on 19–20 July alone, Russian satellites monitored four air bases — two in Bahrain, one in Jordan and another in Kuwait.
