The yacht belonging to Russia's wealthiest billionaire has passed through the Strait of Hormuz
This is reported by NBC News, citing data from Vesselfinder and Marinetraffic.
Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov’s yacht has passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel in question is the 142-metre superyacht Nord.
Mordashov is the majority owner of Severstal and is considered Russia’s richest billionaire.
According to data from the vessel tracking services Vesselfinder and Marinetraffic, the superyacht Nord left Dubai on 24 April and set course for Oman.
The yacht passed through the Strait of Hormuz on the night of 25 April.
The report notes that the strait is effectively closed to shipping following the start of the US and Israeli military operation against Iran.
According to NBC News, two tankers subject to US sanctions passed through the strait alongside the yacht.
Five cargo ships, including one Iranian vessel, and a passenger ferry from Oman also crossed the Strait of Hormuz.
The article also notes that a sharp slowdown in economic growth, a downturn in civilian sectors and the population’s shift to austerity measures did not prevent Russia from setting a new record for the number of dollar billionaires.
Alexey Mordashov, owner of Severstal and the gold mining company Nordgold, topped the Forbes list by a wide margin.
His fortune increased by $8.4 billion to $37 billion. This made Mordashov the first Russian billionaire to ‘break through’ the $30 billion mark in terms of assets.
As reported by ThePublic, against the backdrop of tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the threat of damage to undersea internet cables has come into focus. Experts warn that such a scenario could have global consequences.
