Iran accused the US and Israel of war crimes at a UN Security Council meeting
Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Amir Saeed Iravani accused the US and Israel of war crimes during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East. This was reported by a Ukrinform correspondent in New York.
According to the Iranian diplomat, the military operation by the US and Israel is "unprovoked and planned aggression." He said that hundreds of civilians were killed or wounded on the first day of the strikes. Iravani also claimed that the strikes were allegedly directed at civilian infrastructure, and that among the dead were more than 100 children at a school.
"This is not only an act of aggression, it is a war crime and a crime against humanity," the Iranian representative said, adding that the number of civilian casualties is rising.
Iravani called on the Security Council to demand that the US and Israel take "full international responsibility" for the material and moral damage caused to the infrastructure of the Islamic Republic of Iran and to ensure compensation.
In addition, the diplomat said that Iran is exercising its right to self-defence in accordance with the UN Charter and will continue to act "decisively and adequately" until the aggression stops. He stressed that attempts to justify the US and Israeli strikes, in his opinion, have no basis in international law.
US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz said at the meeting that the situation in the Middle East requires a clear position and decisive steps to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
