Japan is to provide Ukraine with $40 million for reconstruction
This was announced by Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine and Minister for Community and Territorial Development, on Telegram.
Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed a grant agreement as part of the emergency recovery programme.
The agreement is worth approximately US$40 million, which will be channelled into critical areas of Ukraine’s recovery.
According to Oleksii Kuleba, this is already the fifth phase of the emergency recovery programme, which Ukraine is implementing jointly with Japan and JICA.
What the funds will be used for
Over US$15 million in funding will be directed towards the restoration and improvement of public infrastructure.
This includes machinery and equipment for utility companies and maritime infrastructure, as well as the modernisation of critical facilities.
A further $15 million is earmarked for medical and health services.
The remaining funds will be directed towards supporting the agricultural sector and the development of public broadcasting.
Which projects does Japan already support
Kuleba noted that, with the support of the Japanese government, large-scale projects are already being implemented in Ukraine in the fields of energy, transport, water supply, healthcare and education.
The assistance also covers humanitarian demining, management of debris and municipal infrastructure.
The total funding exceeds US$700 million.
