The EU does not support Trump's position on the elections in Ukraine
The European Commission has stated that it does not share the position of US President Donald Trump, who is calling for presidential elections to be held in Ukraine despite the war. EC spokeswoman Annita Gipper emphasised in Brussels that Russian aggression is ongoing and that the conditions for elections, which do not yet exist, are necessary.
Gipper stressed that Volodymyr Zelensky is the democratically elected head of state and that any voting should only take place when security and logistics allow for its organisation.
The comment came after Trump's interview with POLITICO, in which he said that it was time for elections because Ukraine was allegedly ‘ceasing to be a democracy.’ Trump claimed that the authorities were using the war to postpone the vote, even though ‘Zelensky might have won.’
In the interview, the American president also said that Russia is in a stronger position than Ukraine and that the hatred between Putin and Zelensky is allegedly preventing an agreement from being reached. He criticised Europe for its weakness and indecision on ending the war.
Hipper reminded that the last elections were held in accordance with the Constitution and that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are holding back Russia's aggression. The EU supports Ukraine in its struggle and diplomatic efforts for peace.
