The EU will allocate over €1 billion to restore Ukraine's energy sector
According to Dan Jørgensen, the aid will include the first €100 million for humanitarian needs and energy generators. Another €920 million will be allocated to repairing the damage caused by Russia's attacks.
The funding announcement was made on the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Jørgensen stressed that the €920 million will be used to strengthen power grids, restore damaged heating and power plants, improve the physical protection of facilities, and develop decentralised power generation and heat supply.
Since last year, Russia has been attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure almost daily. According to Greenpeace, 217 such strikes have been recorded this year. In January alone, Russia used about 6,000 strike drones, 5,500 guided aerial bombs, and 158 missiles against thermal power plants, substations, and heat supply facilities.
As a result of these attacks, entire regions are periodically left without power, and millions of people are left without electricity in sub-zero temperatures.
