The European Commission has launched a call for applications for those wishing to become founding members of the new EU–Ukraine Drone Alliance. The selection process will run until 25 May, and the successful candidates will form the Alliance’s first board of directors.

This is stated in a press release from the European Commission.

The European Commission has announced a call for applications for those wishing to become founders of the new EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance.

The call for applications will remain open until 25 May. The European Commission is seeking candidates with experience in the field of defence drones in the EU and Ukraine.

The selected participants will form the first board of the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance. They will be responsible for managing its activities and setting priorities.

Why is the Drone Alliance being created?

The European Commission noted that drone production is a priority for EU member states in line with the ‘Defence Readiness Roadmap 2030’.

The EC’s statement also notes that repeated violations of EU member states’ airspace have highlighted the need to create a flexible and modern European system capable of countering unmanned aerial vehicles.

“Recent repeated violations of EU member states’ airspace have highlighted the need to create a flexible and modern European system capable of countering unmanned aerial vehicles,” the European Commission noted.

The alliance is being launched in cooperation with Ukraine. Its aim is to bring together drone manufacturing and innovation from EU member states, the European Economic Area, the European Free Trade Association and Ukraine.

The European Commission expects the Alliance to support current European production of drones and counter-UAV systems.

As reported by ThePublic, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that this summer will be decisive for Russia’s further actions in the war. He also mentioned the capabilities of Ukrainian drones in the context of the parade in Moscow on 9 May.
