Kallas warns that the fall of Donbas will open the way for Russia to take over the whole of Ukraine
Russia does not see Donbas as the ultimate goal of the war, and if it is captured, it will try to continue its aggression against the whole of Ukraine. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, before a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
According to her, this week is crucial for Ukraine, in particular in terms of funding and security guarantees. Kallas emphasised that there is one aggressor and one victim in the war, and it is Ukraine, not Russia, that needs real security guarantees.
She noted that over the past hundred years, Russia has attacked at least 19 countries, some of them several times, and none of these countries threatened Moscow. That is why, according to Kallas, countries are seeking to join NATO. She reminded that Finland and Sweden joined the Alliance precisely because of the Russian threat.
Kallas stressed that in the absence of a NATO membership perspective, Ukraine should receive alternative but effective security guarantees. We are not talking about declarations, but about real troops, capabilities and resources to defend the state.
Kaja Kallas also said that the European Union will decide this week to add another 40 vessels of the Russian shadow fleet to the sanctions list. According to her, this is necessary to limit Russia's financing of the war. In general, the EU is already applying a separate sanctions mechanism against ships transporting Russian oil bypassing restrictions.
