Canada has imposed new sanctions on Iran for supporting Russia
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has announced the imposition of additional sanctions against five individuals and four companies.
The Canadian Foreign Ministry noted that these sanctions are directed against Iranian businessmen and companies directly involved in procurement networks that manufacture and supply advanced technologies to support the production and transfer of weapons by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The statement emphasises that this specifically concerns Iran’s transfer of weapons, drones and technology to hostile actors, including Russia, for use in the war against Ukraine.
The Canadian Foreign Ministry’s statement notes that Iran’s actions threaten “the sovereignty of other states” and violate “international norms”.
The statement also emphasised that “Canada will impose sanctions on those who facilitate Iran’s destabilising actions and will not tolerate actions that undermine regional and international peace and security”.
It is worth noting that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to conclude a series of trade and investment agreements during his visit to India, particularly in the fields of energy, uranium and critical resources.
