Tehran is linking further negotiations with the United States to the unfreezing of frozen assets. Iran claims that this should serve as a test of Washington’s readiness to reach an agreement

This is reported by Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, citing CNN

According to Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, negotiations between Washington and Tehran have reached an impasse, and further progress depends on US President Donald Trump’s decision regarding Iranian assets.

“The negotiations have reached an impasse, and Trump must break this deadlock,” Rezaei said.

What Iran is demanding

According to the Supreme Leader’s adviser, Tehran expects the release of $24 billion in frozen funds. The Iranian side proposes receiving the first $12 billion after the signing of an interim agreement, and the remainder at the next stage of negotiations. In the US, according to CNN, some officials fear that such a move could deprive Washington of one of its main levers of influence over Iran. Rezaei stated that for Tehran, the issue of funds is not a concession on the part of the US, but a test of trust.

“This is our own money, not America’s,” he emphasised.

Iran has threatened a response in the event of a new war

The adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader also commented on the possibility of a new military escalation. According to him, if hostilities resume, Tehran could extend the conflict beyond the Persian Gulf. Rezaei stated that a potential escalation could affect the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and other regions.

“We will take the war to a new level by attacking other American bases that we have not attacked so far,” he said.

Is a meeting between Trump and the Iranian leader possible?

Rezaei ruled out the possibility of a swift face-to-face meeting between Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader. He stated that the negotiation process is only at an initial stage, and the parties have not yet come close to a political agreement. The Tehran representative also commented on the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, Iran and Oman consider it a zone of their sovereign rights, but there is allegedly no question of introducing a fee for the passage of ships.
