Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from Kyiv who ‘joked’ in one of the capital’s shopping centres that he had explosives in his rucksack. He now faces up to six years in prison.

This was reported by the Kyiv police.

According to law enforcement officials, an unknown man approached a shop assistant at a shop located in one of the shopping centres in the Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv and claimed that there was an explosive device in his rucksack which could detonate at any moment. He then left the premises.

The woman immediately reported the incident to the police. Within a few hours, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, working alongside criminal analysts, identified the suspect — a 31-year-old man from Kyiv.

The police checked the contents of his rucksack but found no explosive devices there.

The man was then detained and subsequently charged under Part 1 of Article 259 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — knowingly making a false report of an impending explosion that threatens human life or other serious consequences.

The penalty under this article provides for imprisonment for up to six years.
