The death toll in the Poltava region following the Russian strike has risen to five, with 37 people injured
In the Poltava region, the death toll from the Russian strike has risen to four. This was reported by Vitaliy Dyakivnych, head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration.
According to updated figures, the dead include two employees of an oil and gas company and two rescue workers. As of now, 37 people are known to have been injured, some of whom are in a serious condition.
5 and 6 May have been declared days of mourning in the Poltava region.
Andriy Danik, Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, reported that a Hero of Ukraine, Viktor Kuzmenko, Deputy Head of the Poltava Regional SES Operational Coordination Centre, and firefighter-rescuer Dmytro Skryl were killed in the second missile strike. According to him, a further 23 rescuers sustained injuries of varying severity.
Following the attack on the gas production facility, rescue workers arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire, after which a second strike occurred. It is also reported that two employees of the facility were killed and eight were injured.
Kateryna Yamshchikova, Secretary of the Poltava City Council, reported that 21 people had been admitted to city hospitals. Four of them are in a critical condition in the anaesthesiology and intensive care units. Some of the injured were transferred to a regional hospital.
Yevhen Rogachov, Head of the Poltava Regional Police, reported that the shelling had killed employees of the State Emergency Service and a local enterprise, and injured over 30 people, including more than 20 rescue workers and one police officer.
Police units, bomb disposal experts, investigators, rescue workers and medics are working at the scene. Police and SBU investigators, under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office, are documenting the aftermath of the shelling.
