Is this the end of the Orbán era? Hungary is holding a decisive general election

The battle for the National Assembly
Today, Hungarians are electing a new composition of their unicameral parliament. These elections are taking place against the backdrop of a deep political crisis within the current government and the rapid rise of a new opposition force. For Ukraine and the European Union, these results are of critical importance, as they will determine Hungary’s position on military aid, sanctions against Russia and further European integration.
Figures that speak for themselves
Experts and polling agencies are showing a level of consensus the country has not seen in a long time. Early April 2026 saw the following distribution of support:
-
The Tisa Party (Péter Magyar): a record 56% approval rating.
-
Fidesz Party (Viktor Orbán): a drop to 37%.
Such a gap leaves Orbán virtually no chance of retaining his monopoly on power. The figure of Péter Magyar, who has managed to consolidate the protest electorate, has become a symbol of change for the majority of Hungarians, weary of the country’s isolation on the international stage and the scandals linked to the current government’s pro-Kremlin stance.
What does this mean for Ukraine?
Orbán’s defeat could remove most of the blockages on strategic issues within NATO and the EU that Hungary has created in recent years. Péter Magyar positions himself as a centre-right leader focused on constructive cooperation with Brussels and restoring Hungary’s reputation as a reliable partner.
The first preliminary exit poll results are expected this evening after the polling stations close.
