Kyiv will share its operational experience in the use of UAVs with Tokyo
This was stated by Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga in an interview with Kyodo News.
Diplomatic plans and meetings
According to the Foreign Minister, Kyiv is ready to integrate its combat-honed experience into joint projects, strengthening security and economic ties with Tokyo.
Currently, the Japanese government, led by Sanae Takaichi, is considering the possibility of introducing Ukrainian-made drones to modernise its own defence capabilities. Preliminary talks on technology transfer and the protection of classified developments have already taken place at the initiative of the Ukrainian side. Kyiv is already implementing a similar strategy with Gulf countries, notably the UAE and Qatar, which are interested in Ukrainian methods of countering Iranian drones.
The cooperation agenda envisages intensifying contacts at the highest political level:
-
June 2026: a meeting is planned between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Prime Minister of Japan on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France.
-
Second half of 2026: Andriy Sybiga is preparing an official visit to Japan to finalise defence and economic agreements.
Energy resources and sanctions
Separately, Andriy Sybiga highlighted Russia’s attempts to circumvent energy restrictions due to the situation in the Middle East. The diplomat warned the US against any temporary exemptions for Russian oil from sanctions. He stressed that any easing of restrictions only prolongs the war, and that Washington’s firm stance on this issue is ‘crucial’ to achieving a lasting peace.
