The International Coalition for Civil Protection Shelters has approved the first seven projects for the construction and modernisation of protective structures in six frontline and border regions. Most of the facilities will be built for medical institutions and kindergartens.

Within the framework of the International Civil Protection Shelter Coalition, seven projects for the construction and renovation of protective structures have already been approved. This was announced by Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko.

New shelters will appear in the Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Sumy regions. These regions are subject to almost daily shelling by Russian troops.

Of the seven approved facilities, four are intended for medical institutions, and three more will be built for kindergartens. The selection of projects was carried out in cooperation with local communities. According to Klymenko, the approaches were revised in order to primarily support regions close to the front line, where the need for security infrastructure is most acute.

In February, the Coalition will continue to review new applications submitted by state and local authorities. The aim of the initiative is to scale up the project so that every settlement has a sufficient number of modern and reliable shelters.

The construction is financed under the Ukraine Facility support programme. Practical implementation is provided by the Lithuanian Central Project Management Agency (CPMA) and the Belgian Agency for International Cooperation (Enabel).

As previously reported, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine signed a memorandum of understanding with international partners on the creation and operation of the Shelter Coalition. The government emphasises that, in the face of constant threats, the development of the civil protection system must be based on specific infrastructure solutions.
