A parliamentary committee has backed a bill to regulate Telegram and other social media platforms
The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian Policy has unanimously backed a bill regulating the activities of social media and similar platforms.
Yaroslav Zheleznyak, an MP from the ‘Voice’ party, reported on the vote in the committee.
The bill stipulates that social media platforms will be treated as entities within the media sphere. Upon request from the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting, platforms must officially disclose who their owners are and how they are financed. Social media platforms must respond to violations and restrict content at the request of the National Council. If a platform is not registered in Ukraine or in a European Union member state, it must have an official representative in Ukraine.
Representatives of state bodies and banks are prohibited from using platforms for work and installing them on work devices if they violate the requirements of the law or have non-transparent ownership details. The law also proposes introducing administrative liability if a platform violates its requirements.
