The cruise ship on which the hantavirus was detected
The cruise ship MV Hondius, which has been affected by the Hantavirus, has set sail for the Canary Islands and is due to dock on 9 May.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the BBC.

There are five Ukrainians on board — crew members — and they show no signs of illness. Five people with symptoms of the virus were evacuated from the ship, and two of them have been confirmed to have the disease.

According to the cruise ship operator Oceanwide Expeditions, the two people confirmed to have the disease were evacuated in a serious condition to hospitals in the Netherlands. The other three people with symptoms of the disease are citizens of the Netherlands, the UK and Germany. The latter had been in contact with a woman who died from hantavirus. Earlier, a passenger evacuated to Switzerland was confirmed to have hantavirus.

There are 146 people from 23 countries remaining on the cruise ship.

Three people have died on the cruise ship due to hantavirus. The WHO suggests that the outbreak may have been caused by close contact between people.

Hantavirus is a genus of viruses carried by rodents. In humans, it affects the lungs and kidneys.
