On 19 May, airspace warnings were issued in Latvia and Estonia due to the possible presence of drones. In Latvia, according to preliminary reports, one drone may have entered the country’s airspace.

This has been reported by the media, citing a statement made by Colonel Maris Tutins of the Latvian National Armed Forces on Latvian Radio Pusdiena and on ERR.

Warnings of a possible threat to airspace have been issued in the Ludza, Preiļi, Rēzekne and Krāslava regions of Latvia.

Colonel Maris Tutins of the Latvian National Armed Forces stated on the Latvian radio programme Pusdiena that it is most likely that a single drone has entered the country’s airspace.

According to him, the object is currently in the Preiļi region.

Tutins explained that threat sensors detected the object shortly before midday.

The alert remains in force in all four regions. The Latvian National Armed Forces have promised to announce the end of the threat immediately.

Alert in Estonia

After midday on 19 May, the Estonian Defence Forces also issued an air threat alert in the south of the country.

According to ERR, residents of the cities of Tartu and Viru, as well as Jõgeva County, received the alerts.

At the same time, residents of Tallinn also reported receiving such alerts.

According to the information, the potential threat from drones concerns the areas of Tartu, Jõgeva, Viljandi, Valga, Viru and Põlva.

What is known about previous incidents

On 3 May, residents of several regions in Latvia and Estonia were already warned of a possible threat from drones caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine.

On the evening of 17 May, drone debris was found in Lithuania.

The director of the National Crisis Management Centre had previously stated that it was most likely a Ukrainian drone.

It later emerged that the drone found in Lithuania contained a warhead.

As reported by ThePublic, the commander of the Latvian army wants to shoot down Russian drones at the border, but does not yet have permission to do so.
