Latvia completes construction of fence on the border with Russia
The construction of a security fence on the border between Latvia and Russia has been completed. This was reported by the state-owned real estate operator Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi. In total, about 280 kilometres of engineering structures have been built along the border, creating a physical barrier in areas where it was technically necessary. This is reported by The Public with reference to LRT.
Latvian Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis noted that after the construction is completed, modern technical means of control and monitoring will be installed. According to him, the country's strategic goal is to create a state-of-the-art system for protecting the external eastern border of the European Union
Minister of Finance Arvils Ascheradens stressed that the new fence, together with the development of the accompanying infrastructure, significantly enhances the capabilities of the State Border Guard Service. At the same time, it is planned to build patrol roads, pedestrian bridges and other engineering solutions in the border area
The total length of the border between Latvia and Russia is 283.6 kilometres. In 2023, the management, implementation and maintenance of the infrastructure on the EU's eastern border was transferred to Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi. Similar works on Latvia's border with Belarus were completed in July 2024
