Macron has announced that he will leave politics at the end of his term in 2027
This is reported by Le Figaro.
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his intention to retire from politics at the end of his second presidential term in 2027.
He made the remarks whilst speaking to students in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.
Macron noted that he had not previously been involved in politics and does not intend to return to it after completing his second term as President of France.
“The hardest thing after nine years is to preserve what you have done well and try to move forward, but sometimes you have to go back to the things you did badly,” the president emphasised.
During the meeting, one of the students asked Macron when he had decided to become president and whether he was still interested in France’s development.
In response, the French president said that he had always loved his country and taken an interest in its affairs, but that this was not enough to become head of state.
“I have always loved my country and have always taken an interest in its affairs, but that is not enough to become president. I wanted my ideas to be realised… I thought: ‘things can be changed more radically and more quickly’, so I created a political movement and subsequently ran for president,” he added.
Macron also emphasised that his work has been and remains focused “on fighting for the development of France and Europe” and defending the values in which he believes.
According to the French president, for him it has always been a matter of personal commitment.
Emmanuel Macron was re-elected for a second presidential term in 2022. His term of office ends in May 2027.
