Macron announces new European commitments to protect Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron said in his New Year's Day TV address that Russia's war against Ukraine remains a key source of instability on the European continent. According to him, Europe should accelerate the development of its own defence and take on specific commitments to protect Ukraine
Macron noted that the hostilities have been going on for almost four years and are accompanied by the undermining of the international order and the return of imperial ambitions. In this context, he emphasised the need to defend the independence and freedoms of European countries
The French President said that in 2026 the process of forming a European defence will accelerate significantly. As early as 6 January in Paris, he said, European and allied states will announce specific commitments to protect Ukraine and ensure a just and sustainable peace in Europe
Macron stressed that France remains resilient thanks to its strong institutions, public services and armed forces, which he called one of the most effective in Europe. Among his wishes for the new year, he mentioned unity, strength and independence, emphasising that it is cohesion that allows us to overcome the most difficult challenges
The president also assured that he would continue to fulfil his duties until the end of his term in 2027 and would make efforts to ensure that the next presidential elections in France are held without foreign interference. This address was Macron's ninth and penultimate New Year's speech as head of state
