Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela has officially begun his third term following the Labour Party’s victory in the snap general election.

This was reported by the Times of Malta.

On Monday, 1 June, Robert Abela was sworn in as Prime Minister of Malta during a ceremony at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta.

The oath was administered by the President of Malta, Miriam Spiteri Debono. Abela was accompanied at the ceremony by his wife Lydia and daughter Georgia May.

Abela, who leads the Labour Party, has officially begun his third consecutive term as Prime Minister. He is the first Labour Party Prime Minister since 1981 to take office for a third time.

After the official ceremony, Abela walked to the Prime Minister’s office. On the way, he greeted and posed for photos with supporters who had gathered on the streets of Valletta.

Labour have won the election for the fourth time in a row

Last weekend, the Labour Party won the parliamentary elections in Malta for the fourth time in a row. The elections were held early.

According to Reuters, Abela’s party secured a historic fourth consecutive mandate to form a government. At the same time, its lead over the opposition Nationalist Party narrowed: from around 39,000 votes in 2022 to around 18,000.

Reuters also reports that the turnout was 87.4%. Six parties took part in the vote, but as before, only the Labour Party and the Nationalist Party have secured seats in parliament.

Who is Robert Abela

Robert Abela has led the Maltese government since 2020. The Labour Party has been in power in the country since 2013.

Abela replaced Joseph Muscat. Muscat resigned due to a political crisis following the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

As reported by ThePublic, a fireworks factory has exploded in Malta: homes and vehicles have been damaged, and there is one casualty.
