Ukraine is moving closer to producing missiles for the Patriot system: the US Special Representative to NATO has arrived in Kyiv
Ukraine and the US are moving towards the practical implementation of agreements to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence. The US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, has arrived in Kyiv, where he discussed with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the supply of missiles for the Patriot systems, the licensed production of these missiles in Ukraine, and a future bilateral agreement on cooperation in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles.
This was reported in a statement by the press service of the Office of the President.
According to Zelenskyy, the main topic of the talks was the implementation of the decisions taken at the NATO summit in Ankara, where US President Donald Trump agreed to grant Ukraine a licence to manufacture interceptor missiles for the Patriot systems.
Zalansky emphasised that Ukraine currently needs precisely these missiles the most, as Russia continues its massive ballistic missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Vitaker reported that the PURL programme, established by the Trump administration, has already raised nearly $8 billion. The essence of the programme is that European countries are funding the purchase of US weapons for Ukraine, in particular air defence systems.
Separately, the parties discussed the so-called ‘Drone Deal’ between Ukraine and the US.
According to the President, the first documents have already been signed, putting the agreements into practice. In particular, Ukrainian drones can now be officially sent to the US for testing, which is set to be an important step in future industrial cooperation.
The visit by the American delegation took place against a backdrop of intensified contacts between Kyiv and Washington. The day before, Zelenskyy also held talks with US President’s Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during which the parties agreed to step up diplomatic efforts to end the war and to maintain constant contact.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that the US will, for the first time, begin manufacturing Ukrainian Magura naval drones, which sank ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet
