Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has responded to the offensive remarks made by Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov, stating that Italy has no “strings attached”, no “masters” and does not carry out orders from others. In the wake of this scandal, Rome officially summoned the Russian ambassador the day before.

George Meloni wrote about this on the social media platform X, and the fact that the Russian ambassador had been summoned was confirmed by international media.

Giorgia Meloni published a statement in response to the insults directed at her by Russian TV presenter and propagandist Vladimir Solovyov. In her post, she emphasised that a “regime propagandist” cannot lecture on either consistency or freedom, and that Italy will continue to be guided solely by its own national interests.

In her statement, Meloni stressed that no mockery or attempts to humiliate her country would force the government to change course. According to her, unlike others, Italy has no “strings attached”, no “masters” and does not take orders, and the state’s interests remain its sole guiding principle.

The scandal erupted after Solovyov made crude and vulgar remarks about the Italian Prime Minister during a live broadcast. Reuters and ANSA reported that he used offensive language against Meloni, in particular accusing her of “betraying” voters and Donald Trump.

Following this, Italy summoned the Russian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described Solovyov’s statements as extremely serious and offensive. Reuters notes that Rome has thus officially lodged a protest over the Russian propagandist’s public attacks against the head of government.

Against the backdrop of the scandal, the political context also attracted attention. International media link Solovyov’s attack to Meloni’s recent public disagreements with Donald Trump, as well as to her unwavering support for Ukraine, despite the long-standing pro-Russian sympathies of certain factions within Italian politics.

Thus, Meloni’s public response was not merely a reaction to personal insults, but also a political signal that Rome has no intention of altering its stance under pressure from Russian propaganda.

As reported by ThePublic, Zelenskyy spoke about what he discussed with Meloni during his visit to Italy
