Merz does not rule out talks on Ukraine in Berlin as early as next week
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the E3 group has proposed to US President Donald Trump to agree on draft documents on possible steps towards peace in Ukraine in the coming days. Source: Ukrinform. According to him, during a joint conversation with the US, France and the UK, the parties held constructive consultations and are now awaiting further dialogue with the American administration.
Germany expects that the talks could take place as early as next week, possibly in Berlin. Merz clarified that the drafts refer to potential territorial concessions that Ukraine could consider, but stressed that this issue must be decided by the Ukrainian President and the Ukrainian people. European partners emphasised this separately during their conversation with Trump.
The Chancellor stated that for the first time in a long time, there is momentum in the peace process, but the situation remains difficult as Russia continues to attack civilian targets and drag out negotiations. The Europeans insist on three conditions for a future peace plan: a truce with real security guarantees, a model that does not undermine the unity of the EU and NATO, and the inclusion of Ukraine in the common European security system.
Merz added that pressure on Kyiv for an unacceptable peace is unacceptable and that Europe will remain on Ukraine's side for as long as necessary.
