In the Chernihiv region, over 2,400 hectares of forest are on fire in the border area following shelling
A large-scale forest fire has broken out in the Chernihiv region as a result of shelling, engulfing over 2,400 hectares. The blaze was reported in the Yelinsky and Tykhonovitsky forest districts of the Koryukivsky Forest Administration, part of the State Enterprise ‘Forests of Ukraine’.
These are areas within the five-kilometre border zone near the border with the Russian Federation. Due to the security situation, foresters have been unable to access these areas for some time.
The fire was detected using the company’s CCTV cameras. All available forest protection forces have been deployed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to accessible areas.
In particular, additional mineralised strips are being created. The company’s machinery is operating under the cover of electronic warfare equipment, as shelling poses a threat to any machinery.
A joint meeting was held the day before, attended by the military, the State Emergency Service and local authorities. The main objective is to prevent the fire from spreading to settlements in the frontline zone.
All of the company’s new firefighting equipment has been deployed to tackle the aftermath, but it is currently impossible to use it to its full potential due to the constant presence of enemy drones in the air.
