На Вінниччині виявили спалах африканської чуми свиней у диких кабанів
This has been reported by the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
A mass die-off of wild boars has been detected in the Mohyliv-Podilskyi district of Vinnytsia region.
Laboratory tests have confirmed that the cause was African swine fever.
According to the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, 11 animal carcasses were found in the district’s hunting grounds.
This is the sixth case of ASF in wild fauna in Ukraine since the start of 2026.
Earlier this year, outbreaks among wild boars were recorded in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Zakarpattia regions.
Experts stress that wild animals are currently the main source of the virus’s spread.
Wild boars can carry the infection to farms where domestic pigs are kept.
The situation is further complicated by the consequences of the war. Due to martial law restrictions, it is impossible to effectively regulate the wild boar population.
This could lead to the formation of persistent natural foci of infection.
The virus’s persistence poses a particular danger.
The carcasses of dead animals can remain a source of infection for a long time and contaminate the environment.
To prevent the disease from spreading to domestic pigs, the public are advised to avoid contact with wild animals whilst in the forest.
If a person finds a dead wild boar, they must not approach the animal.
You should note the location of the find and immediately notify the local authorities or the regional office of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
Pet owners are advised to prevent domestic pigs from coming into contact with the natural environment.
It is also necessary to regularly disinfect footwear.
Separately, it is prohibited to use food waste or unprocessed grain from fields to feed pigs.
The State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection urges citizens to be as vigilant as possible.
The agency emphasises that compliance with biosecurity rules remains the only way to protect the livestock sector from economic losses.
