The EES digital system has been launched at the border with Romania
Several checkpoints have begun collecting biometric data for faster and more secure EU entry control.

On 10 December, the EES digital entry-exit system began operating on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. At the Dyakivtsi Rakovets, Krasnoilsk Vicov de Sus and Dyakove Halmeu checkpoints, travellers' personal and biometric data is already being entered. The system is also operational at Solotvyno Sighetu Marmatiei, where it was launched in October. The Porubne Siret checkpoint will join the EES on 9 January 2026, and all other border crossings with Romania will be connected to the system from 10 March.

The procedure involves scanning passports, taking photographs and taking fingerprints. Fingerprints are not taken from children under 12 years of age. An electronic record is created at the first crossing, after which subsequent trips will be faster thanks to automatic data verification.

The State Border Service emphasises that the introduction of the EES does not change the general procedure for crossing the border. The system is designed to increase security, reduce queues and more accurately record stays in the EU. Border guards advise travellers to take the new system into account when planning their trips.
