Customs officers in Volyn, working with the Security Service of Ukraine, uncovered a woman from Kyiv who was attempting to smuggle a collection of antique coins out of the country. The coins had been concealed amongst her personal belongings in a suitcase.

At the Yagodin customs post, customs officers from Volyn, in cooperation with representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine in Volyn Oblast, caught a woman from Kyiv attempting to smuggle antique coins into Poland.

The woman was travelling as a passenger on the ‘Kyiv–Chełm’ train. She had concealed 223 metal coins, minted in the 16th–18th centuries, amongst her personal clothing in a suitcase.

The collection has been temporarily seized. Expert assessments have been ordered to determine its cultural and historical value, after which its worth will be established.

A report regarding an unlawful act with signs of a crime under Article 201 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine has been submitted to the law enforcement authorities.

If the preliminary classification is confirmed during the pre-trial investigation, the smuggling of cultural property carries a penalty of imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.
