An attempt to smuggle over 200 antique coins to Poland has been foiled in Volyn
At the Yagodin customs post, customs officers from Volyn, in cooperation with representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine in Volyn Oblast, caught a woman from Kyiv attempting to smuggle antique coins into Poland.
The woman was travelling as a passenger on the ‘Kyiv–Chełm’ train. She had concealed 223 metal coins, minted in the 16th–18th centuries, amongst her personal clothing in a suitcase.
The collection has been temporarily seized. Expert assessments have been ordered to determine its cultural and historical value, after which its worth will be established.
A report regarding an unlawful act with signs of a crime under Article 201 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine has been submitted to the law enforcement authorities.
If the preliminary classification is confirmed during the pre-trial investigation, the smuggling of cultural property carries a penalty of imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.
