NATO is to install anti-drone systems at its headquarters in Brussels
According to Reuters, the Alliance has selected the French company CS Group to supply two BOREADES anti-drone systems. The contract also covers the protection of the NATO Secretary General’s residence in the Belgian capital.
The company stated that NATO had conducted an international tender involving several dozen manufacturers, after which it selected the French system.
BOREADES is designed to detect, track and neutralise drones. The system has already been used during major events in France – notably at the 2024 Olympics in Paris and during the 14 July military parade.
Reuters notes that NATO’s decision is directly linked to the rapid rise in the role of drones in modern conflicts – primarily in Russia’s war against Ukraine and in the Middle East.
Following a series of drone incidents in the Baltic states and Finland, European nations are increasingly stepping up air defences for critical infrastructure and government facilities.
In recent months, drones linked to hostilities around Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly entered the airspace of NATO countries. Just this week, Estonia reported that a NATO fighter jet had shot down a drone after it violated the country’s airspace.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that the US is reducing the number of combat brigades in Europe.
