NATO orders €200 million worth of 120 mm tank ammunition from Rheinmetall
The NATO Support and Procurement Agency has placed initial orders for 120 mm tank ammunition under a framework agreement signed in 2025 with the German defence company Rheinmetall. The first contracts are worth around €200 million, with various NATO countries as the end customers.
The basic contractual instrument, signed in July 2025, defines the terms of cooperation and technical specifications for various types of 120 mm ammunition. NATO members and partner countries can use this framework agreement for simplified procurement by placing orders directly through the agency. This mechanism significantly speeds up the supply of shells within the Alliance.
Rheinmetall's 120 mm smoothbore gun technology has been used by many countries since 1980 and has become the standard armament of the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams main battle tanks. This calibre is the standard for tank units in Germany, NATO countries and other allies.
The company notes that thanks to its technical characteristics and existing modernisation potential, Rheinmetall will continue to offer innovative solutions for 120 mm systems in the medium term. The conclusion of the first orders worth €200 million allows the concern to strengthen its position as one of the world's leading manufacturers of tank ammunition.
Rheinmetall is Germany's largest arms company and one of the key players in the global defence market.
