Germany to send troops to Poland's border to strengthen NATO's eastern flank
Germany will send Bundeswehr troops to Poland's eastern border with Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. This was reported by the German government, explaining that the decision was made as part of strengthening NATO's eastern flank. It is reported by The Public with reference to DW.
German military will assist the Polish side in the engineering arrangement of defensive borders. This includes digging trenches, installing barbed wire and anti-tank barriers. Berlin emphasises that the deployment is purely defensive and not aimed at escalation.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, commenting on the security situation in Europe, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not stop his aggression if Ukraine is defeated. According to him, that is why the allies should strengthen defences on the eastern borders of the Alliance.
The decision to send the troops comes amid rising tensions in the region and regular hybrid threats on the EU's borders. Poland is a key transit and defence state for NATO to the east, and the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region is considered one of the most vulnerable in the region.
