New border crossing rules: from 12 May, "eCherga" will cancel bookings without insurance
This has been reported by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine.
What has changed since 12 May
The new feature went live today, 12 May 2026. It was implemented in collaboration with the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine (MTIBU).
Now, when booking a place in the online queue, the system will automatically check whether the vehicle has a valid insurance certificate. Information on the insurance status will be displayed in the user’s personal account.
When a queue booking may be cancelled
As explained by the Ministry of Development, if the Green Card has not yet come into effect at the time of booking – for example, because it was issued the day before the journey – the queue reservation will remain active until the ‘Entry’ status is received at the border crossing point.
However, if the vehicle does not have valid insurance cover at that point, the system will automatically cancel the booking in the online queue.
The Ministry notes that the new measure should help drivers avoid situations where they are refused entry at the border crossing point due to an inactive insurance certificate.
Why the "Green Card" is important
The Ministry of Development has reminded that possession of a "Green Card" is mandatory for all commercial vehicles travelling abroad, particularly for buses and lorries.
The absence of a valid certificate may be grounds for refusal to cross the border, and in the event of a road traffic accident outside Ukraine, it may lead to significant financial costs.
Drivers will also be able to view the validity period of their insurance policy in their personal account whilst waiting in the queue. This should help them ensure their insurance is renewed in good time if their trip abroad is delayed.
