In Mariupol, the Russian administration erected a 14-metre Christmas tree next to the site of mass deaths during the 2022 bombing, which caused outrage among local residents and on social media.

In the temporarily occupied Mariupol, the main New Year tree was installed near the drama theatre, where hundreds of civilians died in the spring of 2022. The structure, about 14 metres high, was decorated with garlands and toys, and photo zones and festive decorations were set up nearby.

Residents of the city report that the occupying authorities are preparing to open a fair and children's entertainment. Russian propaganda resources call the installation a ‘symbol of peace and revival’ and are actively distributing photos.

At the same time, social media and Ukrainian media have called this gesture a mockery of the memory of the dead. Witnesses recall that hundreds of people seeking shelter died under the rubble of the drama theatre after it was bombed by Russia. According to Ukraine, this is one of the biggest war crimes in the city during the siege. Locals say that while Russia is putting up Christmas trees and festive installations, most areas of the city remain destroyed, without proper water supply or medical care.

Mariupol remains occupied, but those responsible for the deaths in the drama theatre will be held accountable.
