OpenAI has postponed the launch of "adult mode" in ChatGPT
OpenAI has once again postponed the launch of the "adult mode" feature for ChatGPT — a mode that would allow verified adult users to receive erotic and other adult content in the chatbot.
The company confirmed to Axios that the launch of the feature has been postponed because the priority right now is to improve ChatGPT's core capabilities.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman first announced the idea of "adult mode" in October. At that time, he suggested that the company would be able to allow more adult responses from the chatbot after implementing user age verification systems.
The launch was originally planned for December, but was later postponed to early 2026. Now, the implementation of the feature has been postponed again, and a new launch date has not yet been announced.
According to an OpenAI representative, the company still supports the principle of "treating adults like adults," but the implementation of the feature requires additional time — in particular, to create a reliable age verification system and security mechanisms.
The company also noted that it first plans to improve ChatGPT's intelligence, "personality," personalisation, and proactive capabilities.
The idea of "adult mode" has been controversial since its inception. Proponents believe that it will allow adult users to interact more freely with AI.
Critics warn that such a feature could create new risks, including abuse, the spread of explicit content, or potential exploitation.
Despite the delay, the feature remains in ChatGPT's development plans. At the same time, according to the latest data, its launch is not expected in the near future.
