Pope Leo XIV calls on the world to continue efforts for peace in Ukraine
Pope Leo XIV has called on the international community not to relent in its efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire and the start of a meaningful dialogue. This was reported by Vatican News with reference to the annual speech of the Pontiff to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See.
According to the Pope's address delivered on 9 January in the Vatican, one of the roots of modern wars is pride, which distorts the perception of reality and gives rise to the logic of confrontation. Among the first examples of this tragic dynamic, Leo XIV mentioned Russia's war against Ukraine and the suffering of the civilian population.
The Pontiff stressed that the Holy See insists on an urgent cessation of hostilities and is ready to support any initiatives aimed at establishing peace and harmony. He also called on world leaders not to give up on finding solutions that will protect the most vulnerable and restore hope to the affected people.
Pope Leo XIV paid special attention to the observance of international humanitarian law. He strongly condemned the bombing of hospitals, energy infrastructure, housing and other objects necessary for everyday life, emphasising that such actions are a serious violation of international obligations.
According to the head of the Catholic Church, the protection of human dignity and the sacredness of life must unconditionally prevail over any political or national interests, and the international community is responsible for preventing the involvement of civilians in war.
