: Ukraine is introducing a 12-year education system: how schooling will change from 2026
From 1 September 2026, a 12-year school curriculum will be introduced in Ukraine, marking a significant change to the education system. This is not simply an extra year at school, but a shift towards a new educational philosophy that will influence teaching methods and approaches. As Education Minister Oksen Lisovyi explained, this decision is part of the overall process of modernising education in Ukraine: “This is not just about the length of schooling, but about a different philosophy of education.”
The central aspect of this change is the shift from the old model of education, where the main task was memorising and reproducing information, to practical learning focused on real-life skills and knowledge that will help pupils in their future lives. This will make education more flexible and personalised.
Key changes in secondary school
One of the most important changes is the transition to a more flexible learning system for pupils in Years 10–12. Pupils will be able to choose the specialisation that suits them best, such as IT, foreign languages, technical subjects or other fields. This will reduce the standardised workload on all pupils and make their education more individualised.
At the same time, a key feature is that the curriculum will not be expanded, but rather balanced. The aim is not to make learning more difficult, but to make it clearer and more logical for pupils. In other words, they will be able to gain more practical knowledge without being overwhelmed by information.
Pilot launch: how will the new model work?
The first stage of the reform will begin on 1 September 2026, when the new education model will be tested in 150 lyceums across the country. These schools will assess how the subject selection system works and whether pupils actually absorb the material better thanks to the new approach.
The full-scale launch is planned for 2027, following the pilot phase. By then, the system is set to be refined: errors will be rectified, feedback from the pilot schools will be incorporated, and adequate support will be provided for pupils and teachers.
Recommendations for parents
Parents who are concerned about the changes should bear in mind that this is, first and foremost, an experimental model that will be gradually adapted. Changes may be adjusted depending on the results of the pilot projects, so it is too early to panic. All key decisions regarding the system will be revised or refined as the process unfolds.
