Following his victory, Péter Magyar called on officials appointed by Orbán to step down
Péter Magyar addressed thousands of supporters in central Budapest following his victory over Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party in the parliamentary elections, Euronews reports.
In his speech, he stated that Hungary must return to its role as a strong ally of Europe and NATO.
“Hungary will once again become a reliable ally that will defend Hungary’s interests, because our country’s place is in Europe.”
Mátyás announced that his first foreign visits would be to Warsaw and Vienna, after which he plans to travel to Brussels. The aim is to persuade the European Union to unblock funding frozen for Hungary.
“We will ensure the flow of EU funds that belong to the Hungarian people,” he noted.
The politician also declared his intention to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and restore the system of checks and balances in the country.
“We will restore the system of checks and balances. We will join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. We guarantee the democratic functioning of our country.”
Following this, Magyar appealed to the President of Hungary, Tamás Szujók, urging him to immediately instruct the winner to form a government and step down from office. He addressed a similar appeal to other heads of state bodies appointed during Orbán’s time.
“I call on the President of the Republic to immediately instruct the winner to form a government and then resign. I call on all the puppets who have been in power over the last 16 years to do the same,” he said.
Mátyás mentioned the heads of the judiciary, the Court of Auditors, the competition authority and the media regulator.
“Let them go, let them go. Don’t wait until we drive them out.”
He also described the election result as a historic mandate and called on Viktor Orbán to refrain from decisions that might curtail the new government’s powers.
“If, during what we hope will be a short transitional period, any important decision or issue concerning our country arises, please ring me — you know my number.”
According to preliminary data, with almost 99 per cent of votes counted, the Tisa party could win around two-thirds of the seats in parliament, amounting to approximately 138 of the 199 seats. The Fidesz party may retain around 55 seats, whilst the Our Homeland movement may enter parliament as the third-largest party with six seats.
Voting took place both within the country and abroad. Over 90,000 citizens voted outside Hungary, whilst a further 224,000 did so away from their place of official registration. The final vote count is still ongoing.
