At least 40 people killed in US operation in Venezuela
At least 40 people, including military personnel and civilians, were killed during the United States military operation in Venezuela on the night of 3 January. This was reported by The New York Times, citing a senior Venezuelan official.
According to the newspaper, the operation, called "Absolute Resolve", involved more than 150 US aircraft, including drones, fighters and bombers, flying from 20 military bases and US Navy ships. The initial stage was a cyberattack that cut off electricity in Caracas, allowing US forces to approach the city.
U.S. President Donald Trump said there were no casualties among the U.S. military. At the same time, the Pentagon confirmed that one of the helicopters was hit during the operation but managed to return to the base. The operation ended with the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were later taken to New York, where they were charged with narcoterrorism and arms trafficking.
