Summary: what Trump, Zelensky, and European partners decided
According to Donald Trump, preparations for a historic meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, will begin soon. The American leader personally contacted the Kremlin after the negotiations at the White House concluded.
“After a series of constructive meetings with Zelensky, Macron, Mert, Starmer, and other leaders, I had a phone conversation with Putin and started organizing a personal meeting between him and Zelensky. The location is still being coordinated,” said Trump on the social network Truth Social.
Following the bilateral meeting of the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, a trilateral summit is planned — involving Zelensky, Putin, and Trump himself. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz clarified that the first stage of negotiations could take place within the next two weeks.
The Ukrainian president reported that the issue of occupied territories was discussed in an open conversation with American and European partners. During the meeting at the White House, the parties compared maps showing the actual front-line situation, provided by both Ukrainian and American sides.
The president emphasized that the discussion with Putin regarding the territories will be personal and will not include preconditions: “We need to meet and talk directly. If we start making demands in advance — we will receive hundreds of conditions in response. So — no conditions, just a leaders' conversation.”
A separate part of the negotiations was dedicated to long-term security issues for Ukraine. Zelensky announced that in the near future — within 7–10 working days — a package of documents will be signed, formalizing guarantees from Western partners.
These guarantees have three main components: funding the army, US military aid, and the development of the drone industry.
The US president also confirmed the readiness of allies to provide Ukraine with guarantees that will operate on a principle similar to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. However, this is not about joining NATO, but about a separate system of guarantees that will be activated only after signing a peace agreement with Russia.
According to Zelensky, during negotiations at the White House, no unacceptable proposals or ultimatums were voiced.
