An air corridor for Fico: a diplomatic row in the EU
This is reported by Czechia Online.
A Slovak government aircraft is heading to Russia for the 9 May events. Although Poland and the Baltic states have officially refused to allow the aircraft to cross their airspace, the Czech authorities have granted the necessary permission. Russian media attempted to spread a false story that Prague had joined the blockade, but the Czech side has refuted this information.
Diplomatic standoff
Prague’s decision drew sharp criticism from its allies. Latvia openly stated that the Czech government had effectively ‘sided with Russia’. The situation appears ambiguous, as the Czech Republic remains one of the key donors of military aid to Ukraine and officially boycotts Russian events.
Czech diplomats explain their move by their reluctance to set an unprecedented precedent of imposing a flight ban on an aircraft from an EU and NATO member state. At present, disputes between European capitals over this visit are only intensifying.
