In his address on 9 May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that for Ukrainians, this day is first and foremost a commemoration of the victory over Nazism, rather than a “Russian propaganda spectacle”

According to the head of state, Ukraine’s current struggle against Russian aggression is a continuation of the historic struggle against evil and totalitarianism.

“We remember those who stopped evil back then, and we are stopping it now,” Zelenskyy emphasised.

“Not the Kremlin’s show”

The President stated that Russia is attempting to use 9 May as a propaganda tool through military parades and displays of force. At the same time, for Ukraine, according to Zelenskyy, this date has a different meaning.

“For us, it is a day of remembrance, a day of honour, a day of struggle. We will not allow it to be turned into a Kremlin show,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

On the contribution of Ukrainians to the victory over Nazism

In his address, Zelenskyy also recalled that Ukrainians made one of the greatest contributions to the victory over Nazism during the Second World War. He noted that millions of Ukrainians fought in the armies of the anti-Hitler coalition, whilst millions more fell victim to the totalitarian regime. The President emphasised that today Ukraine is once again forced to fight against aggression and defend freedom.

An appeal to allies

Separately, Zelenskyy addressed the international community with a call to remember the lessons of history. In his words, modern Russian aggression is a continuation of the totalitarian practices of the past, and stopping this new evil is only possible through joint efforts. At the end of his address, the President thanked the Ukrainian military and Ukraine’s partners for their support.

“True victory is freedom. And we will achieve it,” Zelenskyy declared.
