President of Lithuania: SDC to consider freezing or confiscating Belarusian assets
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that at the next meeting of the State Defence Council, they plan to consider which Belarusian assets in the country could be frozen or confiscated. According to him, this is due to ongoing hybrid actions by Minsk, which include mass launches of balloons carrying contraband. This was reported by The Public with reference to Delfi. Nausėda said that the issue of assets will be one of the key topics, along with the discussion of integrated air defence. He specified that state structures are analysing which resources belong to Belarusian entities in Lithuania and what options are available, ranging from freezing to complete confiscation. The DRO meeting is expected in mid-December.
In recent weeks, Lithuanian services have recorded an increase in the activity of balloons carrying contraband launched from Belarusian territory. Because of this, Vilnius Airport has been closed several times. The airport was closed on Friday and Sunday evening and only resumed operations the following day.
The weather balloon crisis has prompted several meetings of the National Security Commission and is also being discussed at the international level. The government is preparing a decision on a state of emergency throughout the country.
