UNDP to allocate over $230 million for urgent energy equipment for Ukraine
The decision was announced by Ukraine's Permanent Mission to the UN, according to Ukrinform. The funding was a response to an appeal by the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in New York. Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, met with Alexander de Croo, the newly appointed UNDP Administrator, and Ivana Živković, UNDP Regional Director for Europe. The Ukrainian side provided a list of the most urgent needs for the restoration of damaged energy facilities.
According to an official note, in 2026, there are plans for the urgent purchase and installation of additional equipment worth more than $230 million. This includes cogeneration plants, gas turbine equipment, transformers, compressor stations, modular boiler rooms and other critical equipment.
The equipment will be sent to Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Kremenchuk, Lviv, Lutsk, Shostka and other cities. Among the largest projects are the installation of a 54-megawatt gas turbine unit at the Kremenchuk Thermal Power Plant at a cost of $24 million, cogeneration units for Kyiv with a capacity of 25 megawatts at a cost of $20 million, and for Odesa with a capacity of 40 megawatts, also at a cost of $20 million. In Zaporizhzhia, there are plans to install 16.2 and 20 megawatt units at a cost of $8 million, and in Mykolaiv, a 9.8 megawatt unit at a cost of $5.5 million.
As of early 2026, UNDP has already purchased energy equipment with a total capacity of 572.3 megawatts for Ukraine. More than 6.6 million Ukrainians have received practical support.
