Putin has simplified the process of obtaining Russian citizenship in Transnistria
This has been reported by the Russian news agency TASS.
The Kremlin has stated that this is to “protect the rights” of the region’s residents
The document states that the decree was adopted “with the aim of protecting human and civil rights and freedoms”. The right to obtain Russian citizenship under a simplified procedure will be granted to adults of legal capacity who are permanently resident in Transnistria at the time the decree comes into force. The simplified procedure also applies to orphans, children deprived of parental care, and legally incapacitated persons residing in the region.
Transnistria remains an unrecognised region of Moldova
Transnistria has effectively been outside Chisinau’s control since the early 1990s. Russian troops are still present in the region. Russia has previously applied the practice of simplified citizenship granting in territories under its political or military influence. The Kremlin has taken similar decisions regarding the occupied territories of Ukraine, as well as Abkhazia and South Ossetia. There has been no official reaction from the Moldovan authorities to the new decree as yet.
