The Verkhovna Rada has decided to establish a temporary special commission that will deal with reforming legislation and protecting academic property.

On 11 March, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a decision to establish a Temporary Special Commission on the Preservation and Development of Academic Science. This was reported by the press service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

According to the resolution (reg. No. 15064), it is proposed that People's Deputy Oleksandr Kopylenko be elected as the chair of the newly created commission, and People's Deputy Yuriy Pavlenko as his deputy.

The TSC plans to include representatives of all parliamentary factions and deputy groups.

One of the commission's key tasks is to prepare proposals for improving legislation in the field of academic science. In particular, this involves the development of a new draft law "On the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and National Sectoral Academies," which is to replace the current law on the legal regime of the NAS of Ukraine and its property complex. Amendments to the law "On Scientific and Scientific-Technical Activity" are also planned.

In addition, the commission will study the issue of compliance with legislation on the property of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and sectoral academies, as well as prepare legislative initiatives to improve the efficiency of its use.

Other areas of work include preparing measures to counter the illegal use of the property of academic institutions and developing proposals to improve the academic science management system.

The main committee that worked on the draft resolution was the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Regulations, Deputy Ethics and Organisation of Parliamentary Work. Following its review, it recommended that the Verkhovna Rada adopt the document with the proposed amendments.
